Your morning sets the momentum and tone for the day, how you start it makes a lot of difference in the progress of your day.
How You Might Be Starting Your Morning
You might just be letting whatever happens, happen to you.
Honestly, you might just wake up and not give any thought to how you start your morning each day.
You check social media, eat some food, jump in the shower and call it a morning as you complain about the traffic on the way to work or about how much schoolwork you have to do.
You don't really have a routine for the morning and you are just reactive to whatever happens to you right when you wake up.
Maybe you get a few texts that you respond to right away or hop on social media to see that everyone went out last night and you weren't invited, that doesn't really help you start the day on the right foot now does it?
I used to fall victim to the same things, and frankly I still do even when my focus on my mindset is at the forefront of my day. Why? Because it is too easy to just wake up and check social media, not spend time for ourselves. We feel like we are missing out on something or that we need to constantly be checking it.
It is too easy to fall victim to the pattern of just letting life happen to us, we have to catch ourselves every once in a while.
That wouldn't be a problem except for that...
I wouldn't care about how you started your day every day if it weren't for the simple fact that I have seen the impact of a slow and unproductive morning in my own life and don't like the road it takes us down...
Time to change that.
The morning is everything, it sets the tone for the rest of the day and gets the momentum rolling. I'm sure you have heard this a million times but have you actually put it to use? Or have you just discounted it, thinking that there is no way your morning can have that big of an effect on your life and goals?
You have probably not taken action on it because you are trying to find that easy way to reach your goals, that "secret" that all the "successful" people know and you don't.
Well, you can look forever and still not find it because the answer is right in front of your face. It is the actions you take that leads to the mindset that you need. There is no one strategy.
Don't take the time to control your morning or set the tone for the day you will almost for sure run into problems later on in the day and end up doing nothing very productive. I'll talk about this later though.
You Want to Try and Avoid These Stressors in The Morning
Even if you don't want to develop a full morning routine every day.
Maybe a morning routine might not be for you because you don't have enough time. I get that, I'm in college and have a ton of free time on my hands so those of you with families or even just busier schedules might be a little more strapped for time.
That is fine, I am not saying you need a full routine here, maybe just start with avoiding things in the morning that can alter the momentum and course of your day.
Sometimes the things that we take out of our lives, or avoid all together in this case, are just as impactful as all of the things that we are trying to add to our lives.
Just start by avoiding these things in the morning before you jump into adding a full routine to your morning...
You can sum this whole section up by saying that you need to avoid unnecessary stressors in the morning as they have a larger impact than one might think on your day.
And if you don't avoid these, you might run the risk of...
Losing all your momentum during the day and just falling back into the same old patterns, the patterns that have gotten you nowhere near where you want to be in terms of your goals.
Once you start too stress yourself out in the morning, it gets easier to do what isn't challenging going because you are using all of your energy worried about being stressed.
I'm sure you can find examples in your own life of where this is already happening.
For example, at work, as the day progresses you get more and more stressed as the workload piles up and you end up just making the easier decision when a decision comes your way.
The stress makes you tired and give up control of your life and that is why we catch ourselves not going to the gym after work or eating that fast food instead of what we know we should be eating.
We start losing momentum and control when we add these stressors to our day and the problems only accelerate as the day goes on.
This is not how you find the "motivation" to get started in anything.
Simple Ways to Start Your Morning
Nope, this isn't a full morning routine, don't worry.
What are some easy things to change that will actually help you do this?
Well, buckle up and let me show you.
One of the easiest ways, and one of the most effective ways that I have found, is to simply not be on your phone for the first 30 minutes of your day.
Instead go through what you need to get done in the morning without looking at your phone. Save yourself some stress and worry about what everyone else ios doing and just stay off social media and your phone all together.
Instead of grabbing that doughnut right away in the morning, cook up some eggs (even if you have to the night before to save time). Save yourself the stress of all that sugar and eating something you know you shouldn't be eating.
Instead of snoozing your alarm until you have to get up and being stressed and in a hurry, set your alarm 10 minutes earlier so that you have a buffer of time.
Most importantly, wake up and DON'T COMPLAIN or think about your problems. Instead focus on the positvie and what you get to look forward to doing today. This might seem stupid but it actually makes one of the biggest differences in your mindset going into the day.
A simple way to do this is to just do a quick meditation (like this one for free on YouTube), or even just do a gratitude journal about what you are grateful for or what you are looking forward to during the day (I use the app DayOne for this).
How This Can Change The Course of Your Day
It's all about momentum.
Reducing the stressors in your morning and even throughout the rest of the day is essential to keep the momentum for your day.
No longer will you start the day sluggish and getting nothing done and have that carry onto the rest of the day.
No longer will you have a negative mindset carry you so easily throughout the day and impact the opportunities and your interactions on a day to day basis.
No longer will you start your day eating wrong and end up eating junk all day because you just keep thinking "What's one more cookie going to do if the other one didn't affect me."
When you set the tone early, the rest of the day is based off of that same tone.
That is why you get nothing done when your morning looks like this: Snooze the alarm, sit on social media, eat crap food and then stress over the traffic on the way to school or work.
How do you expect to gain any momentum towards doing the "hard things" in life if you can't even make a simple decision to take control of your morning?
