Essential to developing personal and professional relationships.Image: LadBible The High School ExampleA look at why some people were actually so popular in high school. Before you skip this section, no it is not what you think the answer is... It is not because they were in sports, are more attractive or are more confident than others. Crazy, right? That's exactly why I thought the most popular kids were the way they were, until I started to dive a little deeper. Now that what you thought was for sure the answer is off of the table, what could it possibly be? This might surprise you, depending on the experience that you had in high school, but they were simply just more interested in other people than others were. They were interested in what was going on in others' lives and kept up to date and supported whatever they were doing. Unlike a lot of the people who claimed they were "no popular" and proceeded to go throughout their day not talking to anyone because they either didn't think they fit in or they didn't have the confidence to talk to anyone. And what does not talking to people lead to? A lack of interest in their lives. So, sorry to break the stereotype in high school or even college, but if you want to be more likable, you have to start taking a genuine interest in other people's lives. Be interested to be interesting...What Being Interested in Others MeansThis has to be genuine, plain and simple. What exactly does being interested in others mean? Well, pretty much exactly what you can assume it means. It means keeping up with what is going on in their life, what they are working on, what their point of view on topics is and supporting whatever they choose to take on. This is absolutely essential to form relationships and if you are struggling to form any meaningful relationships, I would venture to guess that this is part of the problem. Just take the example of sales people trying to keep an existing client, they have to keep constantly calling the same clients and checking in on their personal lives, wishing them a happy holidays and seeing how their kids are doing. This builds trust for the continued relationship in the business, making sure the client wants to keep doing business with them, and it is a dang effective strategy. Or even take a simpler example of going on a date, you can't just show up to a date and talk about yourself, you have to ask them questions and take an interest in what they are doing. A date is not a time to "flex" what you are doing or have done in your life, it is a time to build a genuine connection and you do so through asking questions and being interested in them. If that is new advice to you, that might be the problem in your dating life. And how exactly does this get people to like you more?Who doesn't like talking about themselves? Nobody, it is the topic that we all could go on and on about. From where we are from, to what we are working on and what our goals are, it is at the top of the list of our favorite topic to talk about. When you keep asking them questions about themselves, and then following up with questions to their responses, you start to dive really deep into the thoughts and beliefs of someone and there is no better way to connect with them. You get out of the "surface level" conversations faster and into the more meaningful conversations that you both will remember. Even if you don't say much about yourself during the time with them, they will feel as if you have created a meaningful relationship because of the conversation you were able to have. What Being Interested is Going to Add to Your LifeSo much more than you think. With the importance of relationships being so prevalent in our lives, it is no surprise that this will impact many areas of your life. Relationships help to motivate us, bring us happiness and fulfillment and help us reach those goals better than we would have been able to otherwise, and the main benefit of being interested in others is the stronger relationships you are going to be able to form. From work relationships to romantic relationships, you are going to build more trust in these people and have them enjoy the time they spend around you more, helping your personal and professional lives. This is also going to attract many more people into your life, some that you might "mesh well with." You really never know when you are going to meet that person that has a dramatic impact on your life, and connecting with more people, on more than just the surface level, is exactly how to find those people. It isn't just about stronger relationships though, when you take up an interest in other people's lives, you start to gain a wider knowledge base in return. I mean, how can you not? Diving deep into topics that people care about, you are going to know and understand so much more than you did before and this can start to open up new opportunities as well. Realize that everyone has something to teach you no matter who they are or what their background may be. Finally, you can start to understand people better, understand how they think and act and why they are thinking the way that they are. You can start to notice patterns in thinking of similar types of people and even just understand the person you are attracted to better in order to figure out how to improve the relationship. This one simple mindset "hack" can help you in so many more ways than you think, I would highly suggest picking it up if you haven't been convinced already. Training Yourself to Be More Interested by: MMNTM, the Gym for Your MindAs always, a little workout to end the blog. I don't like to leave you hanging without some ways to actually become more interested in life, so you can actually start seeing the benefits instead of just reading about them. So, here are some quick exercises to help you get more interested and start being more interested in other people... First, simply start off with being more interested in your own life. Figure out a handful of topics that you are interested in and start to pick up some books, listen to some podcasts and just start learning more about these topics. When you start to learn more about what you care about, you are going to start breaking down the topic more and realize what you need to learn about. Before you do so it's simple to say "oh I need to learn about marketing," until you actually jump in and realize there are a million subsets to learn about as well. This naturally makes you more interested and this can carry over to becoming interested in other people because you realize that everyone has something to teach you (even if it just is what not to do). Finally, when you are talking to people, just start asking more questions and talking less. This will seem weird at first but you will see how you can dive into deeper conversations by doing so, just don't keep asking basic questions like "where are you from." I'm not saying to never talk about yourself or bring up your opinion, just ask more questions than you do talk about yourself. This is going to lead to a great conversation, I can almost guarantee that. Just like that another day on the blog is in the books! We all have those good days that somehow turn bad. Here is where I have found the turning point is so we can avoid it...Image: Millennial Empire Builders I know we all have these days, many of us have them often and I know for a fact that I get super discouraged when my day doesn't pan out as I pictured it in my mind. What days am I talking about? I'm talking about when you wake upon feeling energized, ready to go and start to get a lot of things done and then all of the sudden I catch myself later in the day having gotten nothing productive done, or nothing done to get me closer to my goals. What happened? Well, let me paint you a picture real quick here... Here's How The Days Start(insert annoying alarm clock sound) It's early in the morning and my alarm goes off, but for once I actually am looking forward to getting up as I am well rested and have big goals for what to get done and learn today. So, I get started. I take a nice walk after getting out of bed and kill my morning workout. I eat a very healthy breakfast, usually some eggs and broccoli and then hit some meditation for ten minutes before jumping into the blog and other work to be done for the day. The day seems to be going flawlessly for the first few hours and I am grinding out a ton of work as my brain is clear after a nice meditation, walk and a good nights sleep. I even crank out a little more homework that I had from last night that I needed to get done before heading to class. The mental discipline is through the roof in the morning, sticking exactly to my plan and not deviating from what I know is the "right decision." Not eating those cookies right away in the morning and causing brain fog or sleeping too long and causing unneeded stress in my life. Then One of the Following HappensThen what happens? I fall off course just a little. I eat those cookies, instead of sticking to the meal plan during the day. Or, I push off working on my goals in place for watching Netflix or YouTube videos. Or I don't do my homework that night and push it off until the next morning because I just don't feel like doing it. Or I sit on social media for far too long instead of reading or learning something that day. Anddddd The Rest of The Day Starts to Look Like ThisI start to have the mindset that "oh I already fell off track once, one more time won't hurt," thinking I will still be able to get everything done. I eat more junk and cause myself to experience brain fog and just get lazy the rest of the day, not getting anything done. I miss the gym thinking that I will have more time to do things and then next thing I know, I am two hours deep on a Netflix movie instead. I keep pushing off homework because I will have time tomorrow, then do nothing productive and cause myself for sure stress for the morning. I chose YouTube over working or learning about what I am passionate about and next thing you know I am pushing off everything until "tomorrow when I have more time." But guess what, this same thing happens tomorrow and next thing you know "tomorrow" turns into two weeks later you are finally getting to work on what you want (for a few days at least) and you feel very behind. Once you have that one action, or a combination of actions, that switch the momentum for our days, it gets choppy from there. So, stay in control of the day and win the mind game! Repeat this for years and this is how many people live...What Kind of Results This Leads To In LifeCountless days/ weeks/ months/ years of inaction. "Tomorrow" becomes the most common phrase of the week when you are constantly thinking you are somehow going to have more time tomorrow. Or thinking that you will just get started "tomorrow" because getting started today wasn't going to plan. The problem is, a lot of us say this every day and then "tomorrow" turns into days, weeks, months or sometimes even years of in-action. Meaning you aren't getting closer to your goals, you aren't working on what you are passionate about and you aren't excelling in life. At this point we are just going through the motions and then so many people wonder why other people are so much more "successful" than they are, I wonder why... Just remember, we are what we do, not just what we think about. Sure, thinking about your goals and planning them out in your mind will make you feel good, but they won't impact your life until you actually start doing them, not just pushing them off every day. How to Course Correct This HabitThis is almost definitely a factor in why you are struggling in one area or another. This is going to be one of the easier solutions to hear but open of the harder ones to actually implement as it will take a large amount of mental discipline, I know you guys are up for it though. Usually around late morning, or maybe lunch time, through the early afternoon and evening are the times when you are going to start to be tested by your mind to start to do something that will switch the momentum for the day. Maybe those Oreos are calling your name, maybe you haven't been on social media all day and you are itching to see what people are doing, maybe you have been dying to see that next episode on Netflix. Whatever it may be that is tempting you to head off course of your goals that day, recognize it and force yourself to not get tempted. I never said it was going to be easy because sometimes all you want to do is eat that cookie or watch Netflix. Right when we do that is when we start to lose the momentum we have created so far during the day and that is when the day starts to go downhill. Once you make that one deviation, it is easier and easier to make more throughout the day until you realize that you really haven't gotten anything productive done for the day. And with so many people having this happen right away in the morning when they lose the battle with their mind to get out of bed, no wonder so many people feel like they can't gain any traction. Recognize when you are starting to get tempted and then force yourself not to, or at least push your deviation off as late into the day as possible. Pushing that deviation late into the day will be a good starting point if you feel like you just can't go all day without craving that "sweet tooth" or watching Netflix. Wow, just like that another day on the blog is in the books! Thanks for all the support and if you enjoyed this or learned anything I just ask one thing: bring a friend back tomorrow! Stop back with a friend tomorrow-- yourmmntm.com/blog -Taylor Here's Some More Content To Learn From...The hardest and most impactful habit you can add to your mental "toolbox."Image: Time As a business owner, or even just someone who is trying to excel within their job at a company, you know the importance of taking control of your days. And what lies at the foundation of your days? Our habits. They subconsciously govern us from the time we wake up to the time we go to bed and this is the reason that many people don't get done as much as they would like to during the day. They have engrained into their mind habits such as getting distracted on social media every few minutes or even just keeping themselves busy during the day so they feel productive, while not getting any real work done. As we get older and older, our habits become either a blessing or a curse as we are fighting for time in every area of our life. We are likely to have the most free time we ever will at this point in our lives, especially if we are in college, just out of college or even still in our 20's. Might as well take advantage of that and learn a habit that you will thank yourself for as early as tomorrow! I almost forgot! If you are new to the blog, thanks for stopping by! With MMNTM (mo-men-tum) my goal is to help you level up your mind and mindset with effective "workouts." Much like you would train your body, this is the gym for your mindset, everything from your happiness and mental clarity to mental discipline and productivity. These are the things that have helped me the most and I love sharing them with you daily on yourmmntm.com/blog so be sure to stop out daily! Now let's get back to what you started reading for. A Glimpse At What You're Going to Learn:
Why You Are Reading So Many Articles To Change Your HabitsI would put money on this not being the first post you have read. I'm sure this might not even be the 10th post you read on habits, it is a weird spiral to be stuck in because reading about habits can make us feel like we are being productive as we are looking for that "perfect habit" to add to your life. When in reality we are no closer to our goal of improving our life than we were when we started reading. But, you never find that perfect habit and waste months of time reading when you could have actually taken some action and built the mental discipline to stick with a habit through all of this time. Props to you for even reading these types of articles as many people just accept where they are at, when life doesn't go their way, and essentially just end up going through the motions of life, never really accomplishing anything. Whether you just aren't seeing the results you want in your job, aren't getting those sales in your business, aren't spending enough time creating what you want to be creating or whatever it may be. I hope this can help you actually start creating a new habit, if you have been looking for that "one perfect habit" this might be it. Start Honoring The Commitments You Make To YourselfAnd why this is the habit you should start with... What, were you expecting, an easier habit? Maybe like "journal in the morning" and your business will start to thrive? Not one that is actually mentally challenging? Well, nothing worth having is easy and no habit worth creating is that easy either. This is a very mentally challenging habit because even though we ,make commitments to ourselves everyday on what we are going to get done, a lot of the time we think of an excuse on why it can't get done. Well now you don't get those excuses. Now you actually have to flip the switch in your mind every time you want to make an excuse and not do something that you told yourself you were going to do that day, and actually do that thing. It might be the most mentally challenging thing you will take on this month and that is alright, it is a life long habit that if you can master you are going to be sooooo much further along in the game of life than many other people. Image: AIA NJ What Does This Include? This can literally encompass anything you tell yourself that you are going to do on a daily basis and then never do. Maybe you told yourself that you were going to eat no sugar this week and then by noon on Tuesday, someone brought in cake and you had some and told yourself "next time I won't." Maybe you said you would go to the gym today and it got to be pretty late at work and you told yourself tomorrow you will for sure go, but the same thing happens. Maybe you said you were going to work on that side project that you have been putting off for months because of the extra work, even though you really care about the topic, but you never did that either. Or you even said you were going to spend more time with your significant other but you ended up watching Netflix instead. We do all these things and then wonder why we are not getting the same results as others people are or wonder why we are struggling with confidence. Well, maybe it's because you never do what you say you are going to or tell people you are going to, why would you have confidence if you can't even keep a commitment to yourself? What Everyone Else Does When They Make Commitments To ThemselvesThis is how you start to stand out... They do exactly what I was talking about above. "Oh I guess I'll do it tomorrow" "I promise myself next time I won't do _____." "This can't happen again." And you know what? They don't do it tomorrow, they definitely do whatever they were going to avoid next time and it almost always happens again. Why? Because our minds are wired to do what is easier and just falling back into the bad habit of not honoring your word is easier than actually putting in the work and honoring your word. Even if they do take the time and create some discipline to actually keep their word, are they doing it for an extended period of time or are they doing it every area of their life? I don't think so, and this is where massive opportunities lie in work and life for those of us who can create this habit. How This Will Start to Change Your Business and WorkHUGEEEE changes coming your way. So, what exactly is this going to do for your business and/ or the work you are doing? Well, when you actually start to hold the commitments you make to yourself, you are going to be getting way more done in terms of what you need to do, and want to, in your business and same goes for any work. While you might have spent hours doing nothing or scrolling through social media while at work previously, now you don't have that option because we are holding commitments to ourselves. Naturally, this is going to lead to more effective work getting done because you always promise yourself that you are going to get that "harder" work done, when in reality you just do what keeps you busy and "productive." Now we can actually get that hard stuff done in our work day and that is going to be a game changer. Yes, something like this is simple in concept, but when you actually start to execute on it, it is a whole different ball game. It is a game that is well worth playing though, so don't pass it up. Face this challenge head on, build this habit and it might be the best thing you have done for your work all year. Image: Runner's World How Is This Going to Improve Your Mindset? In more ways than you think. This has everything to do with your mindset, starting out with your confidence. We miss a lot of opportunities because we lack confidence, whether it's the opportunity to meet someone or take on a new project or hear a new idea. When we aren't confident, we do what is easy and go open our phone to avoid the situation all together. Want to know the biggest benefit of this habit? An increase of confidence. When you actually start following through on the things that you told yourself you were going to do, you start showing yourself that you actually are enough. You are enough to reach your goals and you are in full control of doing so. This is a powerful thing to add to that toolbox we call our minds as you can start attacking every situation, ready to learn, and not avoiding the situation because you don't think you are good enough to be there or think that only other people get success. Another thing that this habit builds is more than a little bit of mental endurance. When you start honoring every commitment you make to yourself and not just the ones you feel like honoring, and doing it for an extended period of time, you are going to build up the ability to do hard things for an extended period of time without getting as easily distracted. This is your mental endurance and it is something a lot of us lack because it is not something we naturally have unless we have practiced doing mentally hard things for an extended period of time. Why This is The Habit You Should Start Building NowYou really shouldn't give yourself another option if you are serious about your results at work and in business. Why not any of the other ones you have been reading about? Well, if you are serious about results, there really is no better habit to start building than this one because it is one we all struggle with and can make there biggest impact (as you have read about above). Sure, some of the other habits you read about might make you feel better, but if you are specifically looking to build confidence and start seeing results in what you do rather than just going through the motions, you need to get on this. Plus, once you build this as a foundation in your mindset, it will be easier to keep other habits as you will have the discipline to stick through the hard things for an extended period of time. This should be a no brainer and the only habit you should consider starting today. Don't try to create like three habits at once either, start with one and work on that for a while (ideally a month or two). If you try to do too much at once, you are not going to have any of the habits stick or be effective. Andddd just like that another day on the blog is in the books! And this blog is going to cover a great tool you can easily add to the toolbox of your mind. I almost forgot! If you are new to the blog, thanks for stopping by! These are the things that have helped me the most and I love sharing them with you daily on yourmmntm.com/blog so be sure to stop out daily! Now let's get back to what you started reading for. Here is What to Look Forward to In The Post:
Why Our Work Sometimes PlateausWe get comfortable and start going through the motions because it is easy. We like to think that when we get into a "groove" in work and life it is a good thing because you are finally getting comfortable in your job and your routine. While that is all fine and dandy, you might be really holding yourself back by doing this. What happens when you let this go on for years and essentially you are living the same day for years on end, doing the same work and (not surprisingly) getting paid essentially the same every year, after you account for inflation. No wonder a lot of people always complain about their careers, they are doing nothing but showing up and doing the same amount off work, they are easily replaceable and this is not how you get a pay raise. You have to make yourself stand out, if you are going through the motions, that is probably accomplishing the opposite of what you are trying to accomplish. At that point you are just another number in the company. What Does A Rut Look Like in Your Work?It is likely what you might be currently experiencing. Well, you actually might not realize you are in a rut because you are doing everything that your job description says. Andddd that is the problem, you are going nothing more. You aren't getting asked to do anything more and you aren't really trying to excel at all either. That may be fine for some people who are just trying to pay the bills, but I assume if you have stumbled upon this article, you don't fall into that same boat and you are looking for ways to improve. A rut is essentially when you have been doing the same thing for too long, however long too long may be in your eyes, and not seeing yourself excel or not. Some of us are self aware and realize this and can make some changes in our life, some of us are not as self aware and need to really take a step back to see if we are in a rut or not. Either way, this "tool" you can add to your "mental toolbox" can work for anyone. Image: Jennifer Newman A Step Towards Making Yourself Less Repalceable in the WorkplaceThis is what you really need to be focused on, not being just another number. So, what exactly is this way to make yourself less replaceable? Well, making yourself less replaceable is going to take everything from improving the quality of your work to changing your thinking and mental clarity so that you can better solve problems given to you or problems that you notice. And really, no matter what someone says, you can't just make one switch in your life and be able to change all of these things. That's like going to the gym and just doing curls and thinking that all your muscles will get more defined because of the curls. You need a variety of exercises in order to define all of your muscles and that is no different here, you need a variety of exercises for improving your mind. And this is one of the of many exercises that I talk about here on the blog so be sure to stop out daily: yourmmntm.com/blog Do something creative each day. Is Doing Something Creative Each Day the Answer? It might just be what you need, plus it could help give you a reason to work on that "passion project." "I'm not a writer." "I don't draw." "Creating content isn't my thing." "I'm not creative." And you don't have to be, it is a skill you can develop and you can translate that into your work! It is not "the answer" though, because there is no "the answer" to all of your problem at work or any area of your life. This is just a mental tool that you can add to that toolbox and see if it works for you, and if it doesn't work as well for you as other things you try in the future, then you don't need to force yourself to keep doing it. That is the power of constantly testing, there is not a "one size fits all" strategy because everyone thinks and experiences things differently. So, while doing something creative each day, whether that be painting, writing, drawing, taking pictures, recording videos, or learning to play an instrument, might not be "the answer," it can be party of your answer. It works for a lot of people to improve not just their work, but their mindset as well. I do it everyday, hence the blog and social media platforms, and it has helped me a ton just in day to day life and school as well. Image: Amtra Solutions Why Might This Helps Your Mindset and More Importantly, Your WorkIt gets you out of your daily routine, which is likely holding you back from excelling at your job. How exactly does this work though? Well, when we start to do something creative each day it opens up part of our mind that we might not have been using much. This is especially true if you literally went around avoiding creative things everyday, thinking "I'm a business major, I don't need to be creative." Well, actually you might wanna try it out. When you add this aspect to your day it gets you thinking differently, for the simple fact that you are doing something new and challenging every day. You see yourself grow, get better and build some confidence because you are starting to excel any something you once sucked at. How does that translate to your work? Well, maybe you picked up the habit of writing every day and you are starting to get better at putting your words and ideas into sentences, this gives you some more confidence to actually put your ideas out there. Plus, with new areas of your brain opened from this, you can have new ideas to share! Or maybe you started drawing everyday and it just gave you time off of electronics and your phone, time to think and let your thoughts flow. This is a thing many people see as a waste of time, or just never make the time to do, even though the best thoughts and ideas come from these times where you are distracting part of your mind with something creative and can let the other part of your mind wander and think. Let's Get Started TODAYAlmost every day I will bring you these "workouts" at the end of the articles to actually help you take action and change your mindset. Why? Because that is one of the major things I see missing in personal development, the actionable advice. Everyone has ideas and theories that are "up in the clouds," yet they never come down to Earth and give us some real ways to change. And that is what MMNTM is for, to help you actually change in a unique and fun way, it's like taking your mind to the gym every day at yourmmntm.com/blog Well, here are some examples on what you can try this week, you don't have to do them all like our normal "workouts" on here, just pick one exercise to add to your busy day to day. I have been in the same spot as you, and honestly you have probably come across many answers to your solution to happiness throughout the course of looking through all these articles. We read articles like these because they are actually much, much easier than actually taking any type off action to change and start finding more happiness. Why? Because happiness, as with anything in life, takes work. You can't just sit here waiting to read something, hoping that reading that one thing is going to make you happy. That is just not how life works, just like in business, you can't just read something and automatically be good at running a business, it takes time and practice. Key word: PRACTICE. Something that you can't just think about, you have to actually do. Happiness is not thought into existence, so stop avoiding the real work if you want to be happy. The Likely Reasons You Are Still UnhappyYou're searching long and hard for a "secret" that is right in front of your eyes. You already know the source of your unhappiness, whether you want to admit it or not, so I really don't want to go over what other articles focus so much on. Rather I want to help you realize you can change and start to actually change, not just think about how unhappy you are like everyone else who writes on the topic of "happiness" seems too do. Kinda ironic if you ask me! So, the reason you are unhappy is likely because you don't get off your damn phone and Netflix and aren't actually doing anything that would contribute to your happiness. How happy do you really think you are going to get when you are sitting on YouTube watching videos of sad songs or just watching Netflix to pass the time? You aren't going to get happier because you are doing nothing to excel and show yourself improvement. Happiness comes from time and work, and while you can sure get a little more happy over the long time when you get further from the period of time that made you unhappy, such as a breakup, why not excel that process? Yes, you really can do that. How Our Mindsets Needs to ChangeWe need a HUGE shift in the way we are thinking about finding happiness. Actually, it's not a hugeee shift, it is just a hard shift to make. What is it exactly? Switching your thought process from happiness is required before you can take action on anything to taking action on things to start making yourself happy. Seems easy enough right? Yes, if you can keep to your word of actually doing things. Our minds naturally gravitate towards what is easy and what we are comfortable with. Taking action is neither of those things, but if we can master this mindset we can get this ball rolling towards happiness. The "Secret" to Happiness That You Have Been Looking ForJust do more. Actually go to the gym. Actually get started taking walks in the morning. Actually start writing what you have always wanted to write. Actually start that business you have always wanted to start. Actually learn that new thing you wanted to learn. Start knocking things off the list that you have been pushing off for years now, because that is what is actually going to make you happy. Doing more and actually seeing yourself grow and become a new version of yourself. You have tried pretty much everything else at this point by now, why not give this a try because I can assure you that you have much better odds of getting results in terms of your happiness doing this than anything else you have tried. Trust me, I have tried it and it is a world of difference. Does This Actually Work? Why yes, yes it definitely does. A crazy thing starts to happen when you start talking more action and seeing results in your life. Wanna know what that is? You start to build more confidence in your life and confidence leads to happiness. When you are seeing results and more confident, you see what you actually have the potential to do and slowly start to get rid of that negative light you were shinning own your life. When you can start to get rid of that negative light and think about more positive things, that is where the happiness starts to come into the equation. All of these things are essential if you want to start building up your happiness. How to Actually Start Getting Rid of Your UnhappinessAlmost every day I will bring you these "workouts" at the end of the articles to actually help you take action and change your mindset. Why? Because that is one of the major things I see missing in personal development, the actionable advice. Everyone has ideas and theories that are "up in the clouds," yet they never come down to Earth and give us some real ways to change. You were getting more views on your website, getting in way better shape at the gym, starting to feel better after changing your diet, feeling happier, etc. But then after a while you realize the results just aren't the same or you can't get any better results even though you are doing the same work as you were before. Why? Because your mind has gotten comfortable with these new habits and it is just another part of your day, you really aren't pushing yourself or trying to do more. Our minds gravitate towards what is easy and comfortable and that is why a lot of results plateau. People think they can just be doing the same amount of work and be "patient" and the results will come, that is just not the case when you aren't pushing yourself anymore. This is how to get out of that mindset trap. A Quick Glimpse At What to Expect
Why You Are Reading This PostAre the results not coming like they used to be? Well, obviously there is a reason many of you stumbled on this post. Whether you were trying to figure out why you just aren't getting any results or aren't getting the results you were previously in any area of your life. This can be applied to every area whether it be your fitness, your health, your relationship with your partner, in business or even in your happiness and mindset. We get to a point where we can't be doing the same actions and getting better results. It happens to all of us, without doubt, in some area of life and we just have to recognize it and change. It's almost impossible to be constantly trying new things and pushing the boundaries in all areas of your life at once and that is why we all see results plateau at some point, so don't worry. Whatever the next area you want to focus on is, this post is going to help you do so. Showing Up Might Not Be Enough AnymoreIt worked at first, that time has come and gone. When you first started this new habit of yours, incorporated something new into your life, or simply just started doing more work to see better results in whatever area of your life it may be, you essentially had to just show up. Why? Because you went from doing nothing in that area to doing something and that is sure to bring about results. The beautiful thing here is that this is always the starting point, so don't worry when you really weren't doing anything too complex and seeing results, sometimes the simplest things in life get the best results (actually this is most of the time). But that time has come and passed and showing up isn't doing shit for us anymore... I'm not saying that you have to go and create some elaborate plan new that the simple things aren't working, maybe you just need to start doing different things and breaking some patterns that you have created for yourself. Why We Just Keep Showing UpOur mind gravitates to what is easy and comfortable. A lot of people end up just constantly showing up for their whole lives and wondering why they aren't seeing results anymore. The thing is if we do this for long enough we train our minds to think that this is what it takes and we just have to be patient and let the results come. While being patient is true, you have to be aggressive in changing patterns short term that aren't working. Why? Because our minds gravitate towards what is easy and comfortable and once you start showing up for long enough, that is what becomes easy and comfortable. No longer is this a new and challenging action, no matter how hard it is, it eventually becomes more and more comfortable. And that its when we need to start to change. How Our Mindset Plays A Role in All of ThisAs in all the blog posts, mindset is at the foundation of everything. If you are new to the blog, I'll let you in on a little something I always like to reiterate because it is so important and essentially the foundation of what MMNTM stands for. And if you read daily, you are actually the best and I'll let you hear this again: Your mindset is the foundation to every area of your life. If your mind isn't right, you are going to struggle to see results. So, start changing your thinking and start changing your life. No matter how much action you are trying to take, your mindset determines the results you can be getting, whether you are consciously aware of it or not. Just think about it, if you are working super hard to build a happy mindset yet you have nothing but negative thoughts and aren't subconsciously aware of the negative light you see the world in, then you are never going to really change. Your mindset is like a current, if you are trying to swim against the current, you aren't going to go very far, even if you are swimming very hard. Switch directions and go with the current, you are going to go forever. You can't see the current usually, but it is always there and same thing with your mindset. How Our Mindset Needs to ChangeTime to make the change if you want real results. Instead of just doing the action one time and then repeatedly doing the same action over and over again for years, how about we teach our minds to continually test and test. What exactly is this going to do for us? It is going to keep our minds from getting too comfortable in one habit, to constantly be pushing the boundaries and that is where we get results. Instead of just doing the same things day in and day out, train your mind to figure out how to achieve that year goal in a couple of months because I'm sure there is a way to get close at least. This is the way we have to start to think, to constantly test and push ourselves, rather than just feel good after changing a few things in our lives and coast for the next couple of months. This just leads to mediocre results. Why would you want mediocre results in anything? Average happiness doesn't sound fun to me, I don't know about you guys... And just like that another day in the gym at yourmmntm.com/blog has come to an end. If you really enjoyed the article all I ask is that you bring one friend back tomorrow for the blog, let them know about MMNTM! Thanks again for stopping out and I look forward to seeing you all again tomorrow. -Taylor Other Content You'll EnjoyYour environment means everything when it comes to your mindset.Have you ever tried to improve something in your personal life, whether that be an aspect of your personality, a new skill or habit or just trying to find some more happiness, but struggled to see results after a while of practice? Even if you were doing everything you thought you needed to, this one factor might have been holding you back without you realizing it. Your environment, who you surround yourself with, what you read and what you hear on a daily basis subconsciously shapes our mindset and attitude towards life. We all know the saying that we are the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with and while you may understand that, are you actually putting that into use? Or are you still spending all your time with negative people while you are trying to find more happiness for yourself? That isn't going to work out too well for you now is it? It isn't just your friends that you surround yourself with though that impact your mindset, it's everything you surround yourself with and consume. A Quick Glimpse of the Article
The Role Your Environment Plays in Developing Your MindsetIt is everything. How does everything play a role in developing your mindset? We already know that surrounding yourself with negative people causes a negative mindset, or with people who are always living "broke" will make you the same way, that kind of goes without question as you pick up some of their beliefs and habits. But what about everything else? Just think about it, if you are constantly listening to sad songs, how the hell are you supposed to get out of your head and start to find some happiness? Or if you are constantly reading things about why you should settle down or listening to podcasts around negative thoughts such as never achieving your goals, how are you supposed to make anything out of your life then? From articles to TV shows to music, whatever you surround yourself with impacts the way you are thinking if you are exposed to it enough. Other people aren't the only factor in our mindset, yet they play a large part, the things that we "consume" or are exposed to on a daily basis play just as large of a factor. Why This Could Be A ProblemIs it really that big of a deal? Your momentum means everything in life, if you have positive momentum, towards positive goals then you are 10x more likely to achieve them because of the mindset you have combined with the work you are doing. When you are exposing yourself to negative things on a daily basis, and we almost all are whether we realize it or not, it is like trying to swim against the current. You are going to be taking a similar amount of action to the first situation but you won't be getting the same results. This is a problem because even though we might be doing the work required, we are subconsciously holding ourselves back from results if we don't get our mindset right. This goes back to what I always say, the mindset is the foundation to everything in life, if we don't have that right or are working on changing it, we won't be able to change our lives. Your environment is one of the biggest factors to your mindset and luckily it is easy to change on paper, it just means you are going to have to totally change up your habits you have around consuming content. Ways Our Environment Might Be Hurting Our MindsetIt comes down to everything you consume, everyone you surround yourself with, pretty much just everything in general. We have to start actively being aware of what we are surrounding ourselves with and what we are consuming. We might be reading the same types of books, listening to the same music or the same podcasts and following the same people on social media, all having an impact on our mindset and what we believe to be true. It is just a pattern for a lot of us at this point to continue to consume the same content and surround ourselves with the same things that we always have because that is what is "comfortable and easy" to us and if you have read the last few blog posts, such as this one >>, you know that our bodies naturally gravitate towards the "easy" and that is not what we want. Just take the popular trend of country music here in the midwest, it may seem harmless but say you go through a breakup and that is all you listen to because the "lyrics are so relatable." You get to a point where you are going to be even worse off because all you are listening to are things saying how sad life is or how you wish they would come back to you or how you don't need love because you have beer. How the hell are you supposed to get better when all you are consuming is words that makes you resonate with the feeling of sadness? Instead, imagine if you took the time after a break up to see all the extra time you have to work on yourself now and went all in listening to podcasts about your growth and opportunities. You are going to have a totally different and more positive mindset than the first situation. I actually did this after a recent break up as I was listening to a lot of negative podcasts and music so I took a step back, realized it and started focusing on consuming information about my growth. That, combined with some time has put me in a better position than I have ever been in, in terms of my mindset. Why We Need to Change ThisUnless you want to keep having trouble developing more positive mindsets... You probably don't want to be spending the rest of your life swimming against the current and struggling to see results even though you are putting in massive amounts of work. This will just lead to more negative thoughts as you will think you can never do it, and leave you in an uncontrolled downward spiral. This is not what I want for anyone and you should not want this for yourself either, time to take control of the foundation of your life. Here is how to do so... How to Start Changing Your EnvironmentAlmost every day I will sum up the blog in some mental "workouts, which are essentially going to help you train your mind, much like you would train your body at the gym. Why? Because that is what MMNTM is all about, workouts for your mind. Much like you would train your body at the gym, this is like your mind's gym. Your mindset is the foundation to the rest of your life so why would you not be training and improving that as well? Exercise #1: Take Inventory Notes: Take inventory about who you follow on social media, the music you are listening to, the podcasts you are listening to, the people you surround yourself with, etc, and see what they are talking about. Is it positive or negative usually? Exercise #2: Positive Affirmations Reps: 1x per day Duration: 10 minutes Notes: You can start taking control of your internal environment as well as you start taking control of the opiutside environment. Exercise #3: Supplement Some of These Podcasts In Reps: While in car, at gym, or on walks Notes: Here are some positive podcasts-- The School of Greatness, The Rich Roll Podcast, On Purpose, Impact Theory, The Tim Ferriss Show Exercise #4: Limit The Time Around Negative People Notes: You don't have to fully cut off your friends from the past, especialy if you are very close with them and have known them forever. Maybe just spend a little less time with them and work on yourself more. And just like that another day in the gym at yourmmntm.com/blog has come to an end. (check out the podcast here) The guest on the episode was Trevor Moawad who happens to be one of the top brain coaches and trainers in professional sports, yes that really is a thing. What exactly were they talking about? Marketing, yes marketing. But not the marketing you would think of such as ads you see on Instagram, instead this was what they called "internal marketing." How you market to yourself, specifically how you market who you are and what you believe to yourself. This has been a large focus of mine over the past months as I have been trying to refine my "inner dialogue" and I was really drawn to this podcast. Let me tell you some more about marketing to yourself and hope you can actually start doing so. If you are new to the blog, thanks for stopping by! A Quick Glimpse At What to Expect
Internal vs. External MarketingI'm sure you already know what external marketing is. Billboards, radio ads, ads on your Facebook or Instagram feeds, brand deals, etc. That is marketing to most people, right? Well, that is one form of marketing, definitely not my favorite form of marketing though as this is known as "external marketing" or marketing coming from outside your body (I'll explain in a minute) with the goal for you to believe and then take action on something that others want you to believe and act on. What's my favorite type of marketing though? Internal marketing and it is very fundamentally similar to external marketing, here's how... Internal marketing is how you are marketing yourself to yourself, essentially it is your inner voice. Including everything from how you talk to yourself when you face a challenge to the beliefs that you hold and follow each day. This is what guides your actions on a day to day basis and can help you significantly or it can also negatively impact your life, which I will talk about later. It is relatively similar to external marketing in the fact that internal marketing also leads you to believe something, this time about yourself though, and then take action based around that belief. The Importance of Internal MarketingAnd why nobody is doing it... Even though meditation, mindset work, brain training, developing your inner voice, etc is essential and actually starting to get more "mainstream" along with personal development, a lot of people still see personal development as "hippy shit" and stuff that "normal people" don't do. This couldn't be further from the truth as many of the top CEO's and even professional atheletes focus on this on a day to day basis. Nobody is working on their inner dialogue because of the stigma attached to it that is slowly being broken, so this is definitely the time to take advantage of this and get ahead of your peers. Why is internal marketing so important though? Because it guides your actions and your actions lead to your results. Just think about it, if you constantly have a negative mindset and don't believe you can achieve anything and that major achievements are for "other people," then you are never going to take the action required to do anything more than just dream about your goals. This is why so many people get stuck in a "cycle" of negative things coming into their life, because they are constantly telling themselves that they are not good enough or believing that people should feel bad for them. This leads to actions that confirm that inner dialogue and a you can imagine, leads to results that are not ideal. Let's flip that around now, instead look at atheletes who hire these types of brain trainers in order to fully develop their inner dialogue so that they can believe in their abilities and continue to operate at their highest level. When you mix you internal marketing with your skills, that is when you become dangerous. What Everyone is Doing Wrong Inside Their HeadsYes, there's a wrong way to think. They are doing exactly what everyone else is doing, what they have been surrounded by and what is easy. And for most of us, this includes a lot of complaining and negative self talk. Unless you were raised with some woke parents, happened to fall in a very positive social circle or have developed your internal marketing on your own already, you probably fall in this boat. Our bodies and minds are conditioned to gravitate towards what is easy and when you are around people that are complaining (which is a good number of people in the world) then you are likely just going to join them as that is easier than "going against the grain." The problem with this is that it starts to train our minds to think in a negative light and then if we are exposed to this long enough, we start to believe more of the negative things than the positive and create almost a negative viewpoint on the world, even if this is not your intention. This can lead to lack of action because "success is what other people have, not me" or even just less happiness in your day to day life. This is exactly why we need to start focusing on how we are marketing ourselves to ourselves, because if we are seeing the world and ourself in a negative light, we are going to start believing that and it will impact the actions we take. Why We Need to Change ThisYou don't want to keep hurting your results and happiness do you? I'll keep this section short and simple so we can get to the taking action part of the post... Why would you want to impact your results and happiness? Why would you want to go around feeling like the world is against you, that nothing ever works out for you and that you can never achieve anything? You would never want that, so why are we speaking that into existence? Change the way you market to yourself and start to see more results in your life in everything from your work to even your happiness as you go about your day. There is something powerful about letting go of those negative beliefs about yourself and going all in on positive thinking, or at least "neutral thinking" like Trevor talks about in the podcast. Very few times in life does one part of your day impact your future so much, this is the exception though. If not executed on right, you will lose your momentum and ultimately make very little progress towards your goals in trade with a little more comfort and ease in life. While that might sounds all fine and dandy, comfort and ease are not what we are looking for in life if we really want to see results. But hey, if you aren't really tryna reach your goals and would rather just be comfortable with the feeling of having those goals and never taking action on them, all power to ya. That's just not the way I want to live and if you agree, keep on reading! A Quick Overview of the Article
What Is This Decision? It actually comes up more than a handful of times each day. So, what is this all important choice that we make so many times a day, yet only takes five seconds and is so important in terms of our future growth? Any guesses? Nope, not the choice to be happy and start thinking more positive, even though this is very important. It is actually the decision to do what is harder, but you know is "the right thing" each and every time it comes up in your day to day. Key word, each and every time. It is easy to do what is hard once or twice and then feel good and start going back to what is easy, that is not how this works though. What exactly does this include though? Here are some examples... You know you should start that essay but there is a new movie on Netflix, choose the essay. You know you should write that blog but going to read sounds easier and you can say you are "learning" to avoid any real work, write the blog. You are on the way to your room when you notice some laundry on the floor, do you pick it up or do it later? Pick it up now. The Oreos are already in your hand and you are ready to eat them but you know you should be eating more healthy, put the Oreos down. Or your friends want to go out for the third night this week but you know that you have homework to do. I bet you can guess what I'm about to say... stay in tonight. Why Is This So Important? If you can master this, you can start to make real change. I am not saying here that you need to never have fun again, there just gets to a point where when your whole life is revolving around fun and doing what is easy, that gets to become a problem. Doing this is exactly how you train your mind to become more resilient and build that mental endurance. When you start practicing and engraining this into your mind, you will start to see real results in areas you previously struggled to find results in. Why? No longer are you avoiding what is uncomfortable and challenging, now you are doing everything that is not as easy, you start used to doing the hard shit. Now that you are used to doing the hard shit, this will help translate into more important areas of your life, not just picking up the laundry ;) You will start to dive head first into uncomfortable and challenging situations that others might avoid in relationships, making much stronger and deeper relationships. In work, you will start to do all the work that others are trying to avoid and notice yourself flying past the results of everyone else. Even at the gym, you will start embracing what you previously avoided because it was too hard and you will notice your physical results changing before your eyes. The key to these results though is when you make the "right choice" every time, it is easy for us to make it a few times and start to see the progress and then rest a little bit and go back to our old ways. That is not how you are going to see results. Why Is It So Hard to Make This Choice? You won't ever make any real progress until you start mastering this. Well, we spend most of our lives trying to avoid uncomfortable situations and do what is not as challenging. Why? Because that what is easier and what makes his feel better about ourselves, even though we might not be getting real results. We might be doing a lot of "easy stuff" day in and day out and feel like we are busy and productive but when we take a step back in 5 years we will see that we really haven't gotten any closer to the goals that we have set for ourselves. Doing what is hard is not what comes easy to us, even though we know it is the right thing to do. Why would you want to choose the harder option when the easy option its right there and won't impact your life as much, especially if we are just talking about putting some dirty dishes away? Because that action, complied with all the other actions of doing what is easy, engrains into our mindset this habit and that will just become second nature to us. I hope by now you are realizing that this action becoming second nature to us might be a bad thing. How You Will Notice Changes When You Start to "Win" This DecisionYour mind might be blown. No longer will you be working as hard, doing things that don't matter all in trade for NOT seeing results. You can now have the confidence to jump into those harder situations and do the hard work there, where you will actually see significant results. Talking about confidence, when you start doing the hard shit, what everyone else is avoiding, you are likely going to have a major confidence boost if you were struggling in the past to find one. Plus, as I already talked about above, you are going to be seeing so many more results in all areas of your life because the results lie in doing the work that is hard, yet everyone spends their whole lives trying to avoid doing what is hard and especially what makes them uncomfortable. Wonder why so many people end up with lives they are not happy with, weird? Let's Take Some ActionIf you read the blog the other day, this is the "dirt" of the post, where we actually help you take action! If you have no idea what I'm talking about, check out the blog post here >> Almost every day I will sum up the blog in some mental "workouts, which are essentially going to help you train your mind, much like you would train your body at the gym. Exercise #1: Make Your Bed Reps: Everyday Notes: I know you hear this all the time but I can almost assure you you don't do it everyday because it is easy not to as "nobody else will see it." Exercise #2: Get Up 2 Hours Early Reps: 1x per day (obviously as you only wake up once) Duration: Try it for a week Notes: This is going to be hard as hell and you are going to think "I don't even NEED to be doing this, so why am I?" To train your mind to do what is hard, that is why. Exercise #3: No Sugar Reps: All Day Duration: 1 week Notes: Actually much harder than you might think it would be, it's easy to make that quick decision to eat that ice cream, what if you can't make that decision this week? Now what? Exercise #4: Cold Shower Reps:1x per day Duration: 3 minutes Notes: To train your mind to do the most uncomfortable thing, hot showers are easy as f**k. Exercise #5: Make This Decision the Sole Focus This Week Notes: Everywhere else in your life that this applies, every decison that comes up during the day, make sure you are making the right one. For most of us, I would assume that it is a VERY large percentage of our day that is run on autopilot. Well, while that might sound all good and easy, it is actually impacting your mental growth which impacts your growth in the "real world" as well. When we live life on autopilot, we are not in control, we just let our subconscious mind take control and guide us wherever it wants. And to me that does not sound like a way that will get us closer to reaching our goals. How about we get you off of autopilot and back in control? We aren't flying planes here, it is alright if you aren't in autopilot, it is actually better when you aren't. D*mnnnnn, almost forgot, if you are new to the blog, thanks for stopping by! With MMNTM (mo-men-tum) my goal is to help you guys level up your mind and mindset with effective workouts. Much like you would train your body, this is the gym for your mindset, everything from your happiness and mental clarity to focus and productivity. These are the things that have helped me the most and I love sharing them with you daily on yourmmntm.com/blog so be sure to pop out daily! Now let's get back to what you started reading for. A Quick Overview
Why We Keep Experiencing the Same ResultsIt's not just you, all of us plateau at some point. You go to the same job everyday, do the same thing, go home and maybe go to the gym and do the same workout. It is not like you are not busy or productive, rather you just are doping what is easy for your mind and while those things might have worked when you first started them, eventually you start to plateau. Whether you are at work and really just going through the motions and getting what needs to done, never getting that opportunity to move up, or you are at the gym and while the workout plan you had worked great at first, you haven't broken that pattern at all and you are noticing you aren't getting any stronger anymore, just kind of staying the same. And this cycle will continue until you take back control of your life. Sure, in the beginning it is alright to just show up and get things done, but you get to a point where that is not enough anymore and you have to conciously stop and change up what you are doing if you want different results. Oh, I almost forgot, if you are trying to develop yourself mentally and feel like you really hit a wall, or even can't get off the ground and started, it is probably the same reason, you need to break through these patterns that you are in subconsciously before you can see any type of growth. Subconscious Patterns & How They Run Our LivesWhether you realize it or not, they do. Like I was talking about before, I'm pretty sure we can go through a majority, if not all of our day essentially on autopilot, with our mind just going through the subconscious patterns that it goes through on a daily basis. Where this ends up being a "damaging thing" to our growth is when you are trying to change but these patterns keep coming back in your life and you feel like you can't break them. Once we do something for so long, we don't even realize ar doing it anymore until we are already doing it and then it's like "sh*t not again..." Confused? Here's some examples to help clarify:
These patterns essentially run our lives and usually they have been around so long, that we don't even realize they are there until we really talk a step back and look at what we do on a day to day basis. No, checking your phone that much is not "normal because everyone is doing it," it is a subconscious pattern that we need to break. Why This is the Key to Mental GrowthDon't try to avoid figuring out these patterns, that's not the move. Well, I guess if you really aren't trying to change your life at all you can just go about your days on autopilot, but to me that sounds like a personal hell. For everyone else that doesn't want that personal hell, when we start to break these patterns we open up so much time in our day to focus on our growth because we aren't doing random things that we "just have always done" and this leaves us more time to structure our days around what we actually value. On top of that, when we start breaking these patterns that we have been subconsciously stuck in, we will be able to substitute those patterns for more actionable habits that can get us closer to where we want to be. Just think about it, if you actually broke that subconscious pattern that had us checking our phones every 0.02 seconds then we would open up so much more free time in order to get more thinks we actually needed to done. What We Will Notice Once We Break These PatternsGrowth can be surprisingly easier... So, you have realized the patterns that you need to break and have started to deconstruct them. Now what? Well, you can focus on your growth and you will realize how much more easy it will be to do so. Instread of getting distracted, you aren't really tempted as much to do so, so you have that much more time to focus on areas of your life you currently want to improve. Instead of fighting these subconscious patterns you have, you are going to be able to attack the problem of your growth with ease and jump right into those activities that will help you grow. Also, your brain will be much more interested and excited about what you are doing because you just aren't doing the same things you have been doing on autopilot for years. Now you are challenging yourself and really putting yourself out there to create a new version of yourself and you will actually find this much more enjoyable than the comfort of those patternms that we have had for so long. How to Actually StartYes, time to get to the "how to actually do it" part... If you read the blog yesterday, this is the "dirt" of the post, where we actually help you take action! If you have no idea what I'm talking about, check out the blog post here >> Almost every day I will sum up the blog in some mental "workouts, which are essentially going to help you train your mind, much like you would train your body at the gym. So, here it goes.... Exercise #1: Meditate Reps: 2x per day Duration: 20-30 minutes Notes: This is a time to reflect and figure out what those subconscious patterns are in your life without having anything to be distracted by. The longer you go for, the more patterns you are going to stumble across, fiugure out why you are stuck in those patterns and when they started. It is actually very interesting to figure out as I'm sure many of us have not taken the opportunity to ever do this. Exercise #2: Eliminate everything causing those patterns Notes: Do you rtealize your ophone being in the same room as you when you sleep is causing your sleep to decline and you to be tired and work less during the day? Get that out of your room... figure out the root cause of the pattern and get rid of it. Exercise #3: Replace the pattern Notes: Figure out what that pattern was holding you back from doing and start doing whatever that may be more often until the more productive action becomes a pattern. Work on one major pattern at a time, if you don't you will likely get burnt out. And just like that another day in the gym at yourmmntm.com/blog has come to an end.
