I'm sure you have gotten those messages from people you used to go to high school with trying to sell you some product that you know nothing about and likely they barely know that much about and it really is just super annoying.
It's super sad that the world of network marketing has turned to this because from what I see it is a perfectly good side hustle that is easy to start as it really is no cost to you other than some time.
You don't have to create a product or service or brand that nobody knows. Instead they give you a proven product (if you do your research) and all you have to do is start developing some more sales skills.
This somehow turned into trying to sell all of your friends and family on this product or service annoying them and likely not getting many sales. This not only results in not many sales it can also strain relationships with people if you don't talk to them much and then all of the sudden show up and think they are going to buy from you.
Even though people have good intentions when they slide into your direct messages with these products, it is actually all about them and they are offering no up front value other than some words.
Don't strain your relationships and give up on a perfectly good side hustle when executed correctly, try a different approach that will take some more time but it will pay off 10x in the end. Stick around and I'll show you my ideas.
I also wanted to say I am not part of any network marketing programs but I was just sick of getting messages, and hearing about people getting messages, from old people from high school about everything from protein shakes to other wellness products when I haven't talked to these people in forever. Especially when I have a few old personal trainers that actually took the right approach and added value up front before selling these products and it has paid them very well over the last 5 years.
Positives About Network Marketing Programs
Learn skills on top of some extra money.
Contrary to popular belief, not everything is bad about these network marketing programs, they just got a bad wrap because of all of the people who fail to put in the work yet expect that they are going to make millions, then when they don't they are pissed.
It is actually a pretty good side hustle that can teach you skills and strategies as well as increase your income, without all the risk of starting your own business.
If you do your research correctly and find a product you have tried and believe in, they already have a proven product and brand that is trusted so you don't have to create your own product or service. This allows you to focus more on just adding value and selling more products, two life long skills.
Depending on your goals, this could be a long term or just a short term side hustle that will build skills and act as a stepping stone to that next business or side hustle. Much like reselling can teach you skills when you have no idea where to start (read more about that here >>).
Finally, startup costs are very low, sometimes even free if you are just in an affiliate program and trying to ell through your link. This allows you to get started with the hard work almost immediately and then you will see if it is something you really enjoy or if you just liked the idea of a side hustle and not the actual work behind it.
Negatives About Network Marketing Programs
There are downsides, as with anything in life.
That being said, there are negatives to network marketing as there are to any job, side hustle or anything in life really.
Where Most People Go Wrong Network Marketing
Way too many people do it wrong, get frustrated and then quit.
Where most people start to go wrong is when they jump into this new network marketing side hustling thinking that they are going to be a millionaire soon and that every one is going to buy from them. This is bad because they aren't bringing any value to anyone other than just trying to sell them and then once they don't start seeing sales in the first month they quit and say it doesn't work.
People looking for quick money never win because they are never focused on actually bringing value and that is what makes you money.
The other major area where people go wrong is when they start spamming all of their high school friends, college friends and their family thinking they are all just going to drop everything and buy this random product just because you told them to.
While you might think you are adding value to their life as telling them to buy this product will "change their life," that s not bringing value up front, you are just selling people on a dream. Selling a dream or solution doesn't work as well as it used to because people see so many ads now that they have become desensitized. Instead, you have to help them first in order to build their trust and then have them buy from you.
Those people are not going to buy from you just because you told them to, so save the time and strained relationships.
How You Should Attack Network Marketing
Start setting yourself apart from every other person who sells the same product.
Instead of going for the cold call or sale where you have no real leads, you are just randomly messaging people hoping they will respond and buy, how about doing something with a way better ROI?
That is offering people value up front in order to get them to trust you and then selling them later down the road. Say you are trying to sell a fitness product from a company, maybe you start a blog or start making videos about other areas in fitness such as health and wellness. Heck, craft a small niche like "health and wellness for school teachers" and then start maiing content around that.
Once people start watching your videos you can add links and stuff at the end in order to buy the fitness product you are trying to sell, or if it is on social media you can tell them to direct message you for more information. Better yet, start an email list where you are able to constantly send them value and then sell them something related to the information you are sending.
This is exactly what my trainers did with the protein products they were selling, they made a gym where they were training people and then included these products as additional things that could greatly improve your workouts there. They sold way more then they would have just trying to email all their friends telling them to buy some protein products.
It might seem like a super simple strategy, and it really is but nobody is doing it! Why? Because they are looking for that quick money and that is never a way to make money. These people will always fail when they are looking for fast results because they don't focus on what really matters, offering value and selling in the long run.
Might as well not even waste your time trying to make quick money, just get an extra job as you will probably make more working at McDonald's than you ever will with a side hustle when you aren't willing to put in the work and expect everything to be "passive income," when you have put no work into it.
Nothing is passive income until you put usually years of work into creating a business that operates as a machine even without you there.

Summer, a love hate relationship whether it is in college or later in your high school career.
You are finally out of classes but now you have to work what seems like even more hours and without your friends just to make some money and be able to support yourself throughout the school year.
And it never seems that those summer jobs pay even close to enough to help get you through the school year, especially if you like to have experiences and travel more like myself. Well, there may be a solution to that if you are looking to put in a little extra work outside of your job.
That is with a side hustle, something that you can actually start today and will make you some consistent money if you put in the work. These are going to be simple things to start and no I am not going to be talking about Shopify stores or any of that, just not my niche and I want to give you actionable items that are a little easier to start!
So, let's jump in.
Why You Need A Side Hustle
That rent isn't going to pay itself.
Everyone needs to pay for things like rent and food while in school, and if they can travel because that is one of the most important ways to start to experience life.
Even just rent and food is sometimes hard with just a summer job because you are taking too many classes to hold a job during the school year. A solution to this could be to take on a second job but you might get burnt out really fast pulling 12-14 hour days and you will not be enjoying summer at all.
Also, working two jobs could stress your relationships and friendships as you will never be around to hang out or when you are free you are just too tired to do anything. We don't want that, a side hustle might be a great solution as you could make around what you would make at a second job, but you pick your hours and usually it doesn't take as many hours as a second job would.
Plus, you don't have to tell your boss you need time off for anything with a side hustle vs a second job so you are a little more free. Having to organize time off on two jobs during the summer can be a huge headache.
If you are still on the edge about starting a side hustle, here is a checklist and a few things to think about when deciding if it is for your or not >>
The Different Types of Side Hustles
You have to find one you will enjoy or you won't put the work in to make it work.
Not all side hustles are made equal and the thing that most people fail at when choosing a side hustle is to choose one that actually fits their lifestyle.
For example someone who is looking to make some quick extra money without much work starts a Shopify store or starts a blog/ social media account in order to sell products or services and then see no results and quit. They didn't see results not because the side hustles didn't work but because they were not willing to put the work in or invest the money required for those types of side hustles to work.
In this case, they should have chosen something such as flipping, reselling, yard work, mowing lawns, etc that doesn't take as much of their time and isn't as hard to get started.
Here is a post that will explain a few of my favorite side hustles for both increasing your income as well as more creative side hustles that act as passion projects where you can start helping people and adding meaning to your life that your job isn't giving you.

One of My Favorite Side Hustles To Increase Income
This might be the perfect beginner side hustle.
Now, let's say that you really don't have any skills you think could help anyone (yet) and really aren't sure where to start but you know you need that extra income because you have a trip or music festival coming up:)
That is where one of my favorite side hustles comes into play because while it may not be your long term play, it can be used as a stepping stone to increase your income while simultaneously building skills that will help you with your future jobs, businesses and side hustles.
This side hustle is known as "flipping" or reselling and I have been doing it for the last four years through high school and college and it is actually getting a little more popular now which is cool to see!
This involves finding items at low prices at places like garage sales, Marshall's. Goodwill, Ross or any type of store or sale like that and then flipping them on eBay or other selling apps for a profit!
The strategy is super simple actually and it will help you build skills in sales and marketing that will carry onto any other thing you do in life as no matter what field you are in you are going to have to sell and market.
Just take relationships for example, you have to sell yourself and your personality to a potential partner if you want them to date you.
Here is a post that breaks down the strategy for you in better detail than I can do in this already long post >>
Other Side Hustles to Pick Up This Summer
There isn't just one option though if you don't like the previous one.
Other than reselling here are a few more side hustles you can take on this summer in order to increase your income:
Some of these take more time than others and some of these are more hard labor orientated than others, you have to be self aware and know yourself and what will fit you the best.
Time to Start Experiencing More of Life
Don't be tempted to buy more stuff with this extra income, spend it on the right experiences.
Now that you have a little more knowledge it is time to use this to start that side hustle so that you can experience more of life. Whether that just be more date nights to different places you couldn't afford before or to start traveling more.
The number one reason that people get stuck in ruts and end up not experiencing life is that they lack the resources (time and or money) to do so. Some of that is actually not having the money and some of that is just thinking that traveling is way more expensive than it really is.
I eliminated one excuse of money for you already, even a side hustle can give you enough extra travel money!
And if travel is the way you want to start experiencing more of life, here is a post on how to get cheaper flights, usually one of the most expensive parts of getting anywhere >>
Thanks for stopping by! I hope you were able to grab some value from this article and if you were it would mean the world if you shared it with just a few friends!
Thanks and have a great day,
P.S. If you are looking to start reselling, there are a decent amount of scams that you have to watch out for that I will break down in this free guide, download that guide to spotting scams here >>

For when you fall into a routine, go through the motions of life and are not happy, this can happen at any stage of life whether you are still in school or have been at your job for a decade now.
Some people just get burned out at different points in their lives and need to do more of what makes them happy. If your parents pushed you too hard as a child, maybe right out of college you need to do more of what you want to do and not what they want you to do, so you start looking for ways to add more of that into your life.
Or maybe you have just been doing the same thing at your job for a few too many years and just need a change of pace, looking towards doing something you actually enjoy doing.
That is where the new generation of "side hustle" comes into play. No longer are you just trying to make money on the side in order to pay some bills or travel more, you are looking for a way to start to add meaningful work into your life.
If you are looking for side hustles that will increase your income, check out this blog post right here >>
No longer is it enough to just work to earn money to pay the bills, especially for us younger generations. Instead, we are looking for work that will bring us more happiness and fulfillment into our lives as you can see the impact you are making.
I would highly suggest you keep reading if you agreed with anything in the above paragraph, it might be in your best interest:)
Side Hustle vs. Passion Project
So, what is the difference?
The main difference between these two things is your motive, yes your motive. Usually, side hustles are to make extra cash on the side while passion projects are more to bring meaning into your life outside of school and your job.
I am not saying one is better than the other, and I am not saying that you will not make money through more of a passion project, it just isn't the initial motive.
With a side hustle they are usually more short term to earn extra income for anything from date nights to paying off your college loans or even traveling. A great example of this is reselling (which you can learn more about by clicking here) where you are in it usually solely to profit. While this can be great, it doesn't add much meaning into your life as you really aren't helping anyone, you are just in it for a profit.
In terms of passion projects, you are in it to help people or solve a problem and an income can be a side effect of this. This could be anything from a business to a blog or social media account where you just enjoy posting content about a niche.
A lot of people go wrong with passion projects because they jump in and treat it like a side hustle, for quick cash. They start a business thinking that they don't need to do much work and the cash will roll in, and that is never a winning strategy.
If you are solely looking for that cash, I would start with a side hustle that isn't really long term and then build some skills you could take to a passion project, if that is of interest to you.
Is A Side Hustle or Passion Project Really For You?
Sometimes what you really need is a hobby.
Before I dive in, I wanted to talk about how you can figure out if either of these things are really for you. Sometimes all you need is a hobby to fill that void that you are experiencing in your life.
A side hustle and especially a passion project comes with a decent amount of extra work that you might not be looking to actually take on.
Some people start a passion project because they are looking to add some meaning or challenge to their life and don't realize they are taking on extra work. Once they start putting in those hours, they realize they really don't like the extra work and are really feeling burnt out.
In this case they enjoyed the idea of doing extra work that they cared about but when it actually came to executing, they really weren't looking to do as much work as was required. Not a problem though, maybe a hobby is the perfect thing for you if you are in this boat.
Try a hobby that really pushes you, such as working out or running, and tests your comfort zone. This is going to make sure you see progress as you get better and better and that is going to bring new meaning into your life, without having all the work that comes with a passion project.
Why You Might Need A Passion Project
You know when that job isn't making you very happy.
Let's say that you really do enjoy that extra work though because it doesn't feel like work to you and you get a real excitement when you help someone in your area of expertise.
Then, a passion project is just what you need. Rather than just having a side hustle where you can make extra money in the short term, why not take a longer term point of view and start a passion project that might not make you as much money in the short term, but have a larger growth and profit potential in the long run? Plus, it will help you add new meaning to your life in a way that a side hustle really can't because money doesn't make you happy or bring meaning to your life.
This is especially important for those of you who work a 9-5 job that you might or might not enjoy and are not getting the excitement out of it that you used to. A passion project will help with burn out in your job because when you have that thing to pay the bills and then can come home and really do what you love with the potential to grow this passion project into something that can pay the bills.
Heck, it will even help with your meaning and happiness in college, like it has for myself, because we are stuck with all of this extra time outside of classes and really don't know what to do with this time other than scroll through social media.
How about we trade in social media for a passion project, do more of what we enjoy, build new skills, increase your confidence and increase out happiness.
Did I sell you on why you need a passion project? Good, let's move onto some ways you can start now!
The Different Types of Passion Projects
Not all are created equal.
So, you are set on wanting to add some more meaning and happiness into your life, I don't blame you! Here are a few ideas on what you could start doing, but first some things to think about before jumping in...
Okay, now actually to some ideas for you to get started:
How to Choose The Right One for You
Try some passion projects that fit your personality, or challenge yourself and push your comfort zone.
It is all going to come down to your goals for starting the passion project.
How to Get Started on Your Passion Project
You can't find more happiness and fulfillment unless you actually start.
Sure, reading this post and thinking about doing the work can make you feel good and feel like you are actually getting closer to those goals.
In reality, you are not much closer until you actually start to take action, here is how to do just that:

Reselling is one of the best ways to make a side income if you have no idea where to start because of the low barriers to entry and skills it can teach you. Within the reselling space, electronics are some of my favorite things to resell as the potential for profit is so high.
I started out in the reselling game four years ago reselling electronics that would go on clearance at the retail store I was working at, and still to this day it is my favorite niche because it is just what I know best, and can't complain about the profits either.
If you are still pondering a side hustle, or not sure what kind of side hustle you need, if you need one at all, I wrote a blog on that topic that you can check out by clicking here >>
But if you are already in the reselling game or are looking to get started in it, especially in terms of electronics, then stick around as these lessons have cost me thousands of dollars to learn. Don't get screwed over on electronics when you first start like I did way too many times before figuring out all of the different things to look out for.
Instead, stick around and learn to effectively buy a device so that you know everything you need to know about it in order to turn around and make a profit. We all like profits, right? Especially when they help us get out and see the world or even just have a couple extra date nights with the significant other.
Why Reselling is A Great Side Hustle to Start
More travel money never hurt anyone...
When you don't really have any skills or expertise knowledge in a field yet, reselling can be a great place to start as it can make you some side income, not take up that much of your time so that you can start to learn other niches and then act as a stepping stone for the next thing you do in life.
It is all about getting a little bit of momentum and having that ball start to move in your direction and that is exactly what reselling allows us to do. On top of making us some income on the side for traveling, dates, adventures or just to pay the bills, it can teach us sales and marketing skills which will help you transition to that next venture in life, a more long term one, more easily as sales and marketing are useful in every area of your life.
Just think about it, you can't have a company without being able to sell or market because even if you have an amazing product, nobody will know about it. Also, when you go out looking for a job, you have to be marketing yourself constantly and then be able to sell yourself to a potential employer, same goes for romantic relationships, if you can't sell yourself, you will never just on the opportunity when that potential partner comes into your life.
For more on why reselling is a great side hustle or if you want to check out some more options, say if you have more skills in an area, check this article out >>
Why Electronics Are Great To Resell
This was my first niche and still is my go to reselling niche.
Everybody has them, everyone has a phone now a days and almost everyone has some sort of electronic device in their house. Once that new one comes out, a lot of people go and buy that one and then try to get whatever they can for their old device, that is where we come in to buy and then resell it for a profit. Plus, electronics have been some of the highest profit margin devices I have found while reselling, which means more travel money!
On top of that, they are some of the quickest selling items on sites such as eBay, Mercari (another selling app) and essentially every other selling app out there becasue a lot of people want or need the devices but can't afford to pay retail prices for them.
This is much better than say a pair of shoes that you are not sure will sell or not and then they end up sitting around forever in your closet before you sell them. Usually, with electronics you can sell them within a few days or a week if you are able to buy it and then sell it at the right price.
All that being said, these are usually one of the most valuable possessions that people own, so if you aren't looking that hard for items and aren't constantly checking for deals or negotiating, you might not buy them at the best price possible as some people have a harder time letting them go for cheaper than others if they paid for it new.
What Electronics You Need to Watch Out For
As you might imagine, not all electronics are made the same and require the same level of research before buying. The list I am going to help you with below is mostly for those higher ticket, usually higher profit margin devices such as Apple Products (phones, tablets, watches), Android Products (phones, tablets, watches), and any other type of phone or tablet, especially the ones that use a cellular network or have to be connected to the person buying the device's cellular plan.
This is because there are so many potential locks from carriers or even from the manufacturers that make sure the product is not stolen. You don't want to end up with a potentially stolen device as that just causes you way too many headaches and you actually might come across more than you think while you are looking for devices to buy, there are some very shady people out in the world.
The below list is not for devices such as headphones, speakers, TVs, video players, DVD players, anything of that sort that doesn't require a cellular connection. For these items you just need to make sure that they work correctly and have no physical damage.
The list below I would stick to for ANY Apple or Android deices (even if they don't need a cellular connection) as well as tablets and smart watches.
Now, Here is What You Have to Check Before Buying Electronics to Resell
Always Check The IMEI
Alright, probably one of the most important things about a device is the IMEI number which is like the identification number for the device, every one unique to the device. This will tell you everything you need to know about the device, including if it is marked lost or stolen by the original owner.
To find this number, either look on the back of the original box for the device, and there should be a bar code with the IMEI number under that or you can even go into "about" in settings on the device and find the IMEI code there.
Once you have that number, go to a website like IMEIpro, Imei24, even Swappa, or just google "IMEI check" and type in that number of the device.
When you do this, it will give you the make and model of the device as well as if it is blacklisted (I'll talk about this later) and of it was marked lost or stolen by the original owner. If it is blacklisted or lost or stolen, obviously don't buy it, especially if it requires a cellular connection because the carrier won't be able to set it up on an account.
Check the iCloud or Android Account on the Device
Next, go to settings of the device and check if there is an iCloud or Android account set up on the device still, if there is ask them to take it off and if they aren't able to it is likely a stolen device.
Even if it is not a stolen device and they say "I just can't remember the password right now" don't buy it until it is unlocked. This is because even if the rest of the phone physically functions, there is no way to get around this "lock" as people call it and you essentially have a phone that you can't do anything with other than sell it for parts (which is not very much).
Plus, the original owner could use find my iPhone or similar apps to track their device to you if it was stolen and even if you bought it from someone, there is going to be a lot of problems and stress with that, just don't bother.
If you happen to have ended up with one of these "locked" devices there is a way to get rid of them. You can actually sell them as "icloud locked Bad IMEI" on eBay as there are some people who jailbreak the phones to get around this lock and they will buy them on there. This has happened to me a handful of times and it is a headache but there are buyers for the devices and if you don't believe me just go to eBay and search "bad IMEI ______ (enter device name)."
A handful of people actually make money flipping these bad IMEI phones, but not my niche or something I want to risk either way.
Check the Blacklist Status of The Device
This is bouncing off the section above where I was talking about the IMEI check on a phone, on those same websites you can check the blacklist status as well (usually at the bottom of the screen it will say "Blacklist check").
What the blacklist status is for is first off if the device has been lost or stolen or secondly if the device was bought through a carrier and the person has not paid off the device (or stopped making payments) but is trying to sell it any ways. This is mainly important for device that require a cellular connection, such as any type of phone or cellular Apple Watch.
Don't buy a device if it comes up as blacklisted because you won't be able to sell it to anyone because no carrier will be able to set it up on their network.
Check the Carrier of The Device
It is also important to check, or ask, what carrier the device was purchased under. This is because some carriers like Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T "lock" the devices to their network, meaning you can't use them on other networks. While you can sell these devices as T-Mobile only or Sprint only, they aren't worth as much as "unlocked" devices that can be used on any carrier and switched between carriers.
Unlocked devices are purchased through places like the Apple store, Best Buy, or anywhere other than the carrier themselves. There is one exception with devices purchased through Verizon though as they sell all of their devices "unlocked."
I like to check the carrier if there is no proof of purchase or if the person seems shady and you can do this through services such as imei24.com or DoctorUnlock. These services usually cost $1-3, because they have to gain access to Apple's database, and then they will send you an email with the details in anywhere from 2-60 minutes usually.
Why You Should Check These Before Buying Electronics to Resell
Not checking these things before you start to resell electronics is a costly mistake, especially because how easy it is to check these things, and has cost me thousands of dollars in the past.
You will likely end up with stolen phones, devices you can't sell, locked devices and blacklisted devices. While there is ways to sell these items on their own, they are just going to cause you too much stress, we don't want that with a side hustle.
Instead, just take the simple steps to check these things so you know exactly what you are selling and don't have any surprise messages from buyers that say "I can't activate this on my network" or anything along those lines. You have to know exactly what you are selling.
Thanks for stopping by, I hope you were able to get some value out of this and help save yourself thousands of dollars in mistakes when you are reselling or flipping electronics. I really enjoyed this post because it was my first reselling niche and still my go-to reselling niche four years later!
