This might be hard to hear, but you will thank yourself for doing this in the long run.
How Many People Make Their Way Through Life
They wake up, jump open social media, text a few of their friends, check the news and hop in the shower.
Seems innocent right?
Then, they hop in the car and listen to their favorite songs on the way too the dreaded work or school for a majority of their day.
Maybe a friend invites them over later or they go out to the bars or they just come home and watch Netflix.
Repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat.
Then what? One day they see one of their classmates that they graduated with or someone they know from a friend of a friend or even one of their close friends, doing something "big" with their life.
Maybe they won some kind of award in their industry, maybe they just sold their business, maybe they are traveling the world, maybe they are just married and seem happier than you are.
We soon realize that we haven't done anything with out lives and it has been ten years of this repeated cycle.
Not learning much and just being reactive in life, taking what is thrown at you and not going out of the way to get what you actually want.
Scary cycle, isn't it? Well, it doesn't have to be that way, don't worry we can catch it early and break the pattern.
Why You Might Be Reading This
You know you need to change something, you aren't where you want to be.
There is a reason you clicked on this article, there always is. Just like there is a reason I wrote this article, it was something that I struggled with as well and still do.
Did you relate to the title? Even though you don't know what you need to change, you know you can't keep going down the same path otherwise you are not going to be happy where that brings you?
We all have that area in life that we know we need to change, maybe today was the day that it was bothering you a lot and it's ACTUALLY time to change.
Whatever your reason for reading this is, I welcome you and hopefully this can be of as much value to you as it was in all aspects of my own life.
It is time to show you why you need to take ownership of your life.
What Not Taking Ownership of Your Life Looks Like...
Okay good, you made it to reading this paragraph because I know for a fact that many people clicked out of the article after reading the above statement.
Why? Because they are looking for that quick fix, something easy that they can add to their life and totally flip the script without putting in any real effort. They are looking for the "secret" and the secret doesn't exist, so they are going to be looking forever and never make real change.
So, what does the life of someone that doesn't take ownership look like? Well, exactly what I outlined above and then sprinkle in a couple of these characteristics into the recipe as well:
What does this lead to?
How This Plays Out In Life
I know this isn't what you want.
This leads to everything that I'm sure you don't want your life to look like.
It leads to a basic career where you just go through the motions, go home and hate every second that you are at work.
It leads to a boring life, with no stories, no crazy experiences, no real freedom, just being trapped in the process of day to day life.
It leads you to situations you feel stuck in. Maybe you go through the motions and then get a job that you hate to buy a house in an area you aren't keen on just because you want to say you have a house. Now, you have a mortgage and are kind of stuck there, eliminating your change at any sort of freedoms.
Most importantly, it leads to regret later in life. Regretting that you valued Netflix over passions and never really fulfilled your potential.

Let's Start To Take Ownership...
It will be well worth every ounce of your energy and time.
Okay, now that we have cleared up that that isn't what you want, now what?
Now, the hard part. I'm sure a lot of you were wishing this point in the article wouldn't come, but here it is, the part where you actually have to do.
Sure, click away from the article if you feel inclined to keep going through the motions. Those of you who really want to change will stay and I respect you for that greatly.
What does taking ownership look like?
It looks like having a plan for your day. Recognizing when you don't know something about your career, life, health, fitness, etc and taking the days and weeks to learn about it. It looks like waking up when you know you should and not hitting snooze a million times.
It looks like doing what you know needs to be done if you want to reach your goals (no matter how small that next step is) and not pushing it off until later, because we all know "later" means it isn't going to get done.
It looks like taking those steps to working on what you are passionate about rather than just watching another Netflix series.
It looks like putting away those dishes in the dishwasher and not letting them just sit out for longer. It looks like taking the time to take your significant other on a date and not just staying in and hoping the relationship works out. It looks like making your bed in the morning even though nobody is going to see it. It looks like picking up your clothes and not just letting them be scattered all over the house.
It looks like doing everything that you know you should be done but gets pushed off until "later."
Ownership Leads to Discipline
And discipline is infinitely important.
"Too much freedom can lead to being a victim of your circumstances." -Jocko Willink.
Taking ownership is going to tighten up the schedule, well kind of depending on how you look at it.
Taking ownership is going to build more discipline, which obviously leads to a little more structure in your days.
But all this means is less time to "chill" and watch Netflix. You really aren't missing out on anything when you add ownership to your life, instead you are doing tasks that lead to more opportunities in life.
Opportunities that can lead to more "freedom." Maybe you will learn more so you can start that business or excel in your career and not be tied to the same desk or the same house your whole life.
Maybe you will become disciplined in your relationships in life and really care about the person, not be on your phone, and form deeper connections, helping you feel less lonely.
Whatever it may be, the few downfalls, such as losing a little time that you weren't being productive with anyways, are not even on the same scale as all of the benefits this can bring you.
Let's Get You Started Now...
Time for a little "mental workout."
Instead of showing you some "up in the clouds ideas," let me show you ways that help you start owning the things you are already doing on a day to day basis. That way you can build the habit and translate it into things such as your "passion projects," or whatever it is you may be working on...
