Why Do We Spend So Much Time on Social Media?

Honestly, you are probably just bored and that is an easy way to pass time.
Simple answer here is that we are bored.

But it goes much deeper than that.

What are we trying to avoid when we are sitting on social media? We are trying to avoid doing anything that is hard because it is damn easy to pass time sitting on social media.

It is much harder to find a side project to work on or even just take up a new skill or learn something than it is to sit on social media. Even though we know that the latter is much better for us, we still sit on social media.

Unless you have been working on your mind and mindset already, our brains naturally gravitate towards what is easiest to do, a simple distraction while we pass the time, and that is exactly what social media is.

We get the dopamine rush in our brain from every like and comment we get or every picture we see and that keeps us coming back.

Eventually though, you need to consume more and more content in order to get that same dopamine rush and that is when we start to spend an insane amount of time on social media instead off doing any real work.

We trick our minds into thinking social media is making us happy but in reality all it is doing is giving us a simple distraction and dopamine rush that mimics the short term effects of happiness.

What Spending So Much Time on Social Media Does to Your Mindset

Nothing good, not at all.
While you might believe you are finding some sort of happiness through social media it is actually doing a few things to your mind that are not ideal.

First, you are comparing your life to the lives of others, pretty much all day, and this just makes you sad that you aren't doing the "cool things" or seeing the cool places or have the cool things that they do.

When in reality, these are just glimpses of people's lives, they are only sharing the absolute best parts, nothing else.

This wrecks your happiness and usually just leaves us in a spiral of feeling bad for ourselves.

Also, the amount of negative content that you consume on social media each day starts to engrain itself into your subconscious mind.

People respond strongly to negative articles, articles that make them sad and articles that make them angry, so that is exactly what a lot of people post.

Why?

Because that is what gets the views and more views equates to more money, it is simple as that.

When this negativity starts to engrain itself in our subconscious mind, we start to see the world in a slightly negative light, and start to speak more negatively as well. This leads to more complaining and less opportunities and happiness as nobody wants to be around people like that.

Or if they do want to be around someone like that, they are likely very negative themselves.

What Could You Be Using This Time For Instead

Soooo many more better things to be doing that could relieve your boredom.
Instead of wishing all this time on social media would contribute to a little more of our happiness, we could focus on more of what is actually going to improve our happiness.

Wanna know what that is?

Doing the hard shit, the exact opposite of what social media is.

Social media is easy to scroll through and easy to consume, nothing worth having comes easy though.

The process to reaching your goals, that is where you start finding happiness.

When you show yourself that you can honor the commitment that you have made for yourself and that you have the discipline to follow through on your goals, that is when you start to build confidence and happiness.

Unlike what many people think, sitting around and drinking on a beach is not going to make you happy, it is doing the hard stuff that you have been pushing off forever.

Get off social media for a few hours a day and suddenly you have all this extra time to focus on what you "never had time to do."

Why This is Going to Do So Much More For Your Happiness

Because happiness lies in the process, not end results.
When you let go of the idea that all your happiness lies in the end result, you open up the road to real happiness and results.

We don't get started on our goals because we think that it is just going to be hard work and we won't be happy until we reach our result, and if we never reach that result we won't be happy and we wasted a lot of time.

Instead, we enjoy some "fake happiness" from social media and Netflix and then just go through the motions in everyday life.

It is time to let go of the thoughts that happiness is only after you reach a goal.

It is the process that changes your mind and changes your mood. You start to believe in yourself more, find more confidence and show yourself that you are enough to achieve whatever it is that you want to.

This is where you start to increase your happiness and find more excitement in your day to day life.

BONUS: Other Ways to Increase Your Happiness Today

Almost every day I will bring you these "workouts" at the end of the articles to actually help you take action and change your mindset.

Why?

Because that is one of the major things I see missing in personal development, the actionable advice. Everyone has ideas and theories that are "up in the clouds," yet they never come down to Earth and give us some real ways to change.

And that is what MMNTM is for, to help you actually change in a unique and fun way, it's like taking your mind to the gym every day at yourmmntm.com/blog

Other than just getting off of social media, here is some mental workouts for AFTER you commit to cutting down social media useage and start to work on your mind.

Exercise #1: Make Your Bed and Take a Cold Shower Every Morning

Andddd just like that another day on the blog is in the books! Thanks for all the support and if you enjoyed this or learned anything I just ask one thing: bring a friend back tomorrow! Time to make personal development more "normal" because it is at the foundation of every area of our lives. Stop back with a friend tomorrow-- yourmmntm.com/blog

Now be sure to actually put what you learned to use, don't just read about it and make yourself feel like you are taking action, actually take action!
